Our 5 Favorite Birds in Missouri During the Colder Months

  1. White-Crowned Sparrow: You can view these birds in Missouri from early October into the middle of May. Different populations of these birds have their own distinct dialects of their songs.
  2. Swamp Sparrow: Take a gander at these birds in Missouri from September to the middle of May. These birds might be a rare sight in Missouri someday because the changing climate could move them north in the next 50-100 years.
  3. White-Throated Sparrow: You can find these birds in Missouri from late September to the end of May. They are closely related to the White-Crowned Sparrow and can live to be 14 years old.
  4. Evening Grosbeak: These large and stunning birds cause a lot of excitement when they can be found in Missouri during the winter. They’re hard to miss with their bright yellow details amongst a blanket of snow over Innsbrook.
  5. Common Goldeneye: This is a stunning diving duck you can find in Missouri from the middle of November to the end of April. If you’re lucky, you might catch one of the males trying to impress a lady Common Goldeneye by splashing, wagging, bobbing, and bending his head back to touch his rump.

Our 5 Favorite Bird Friends in the Warmer Months

  1. Bobolink Birds: These birds make their way to Missouri in late April and early May and start their 5,000-mile southward migration in mid-September. The male bobolink is the only North American bird with light-colored feathers on top and dark-colored feathers underneath.
  2. American Goldfinch: This is one of the latest nesting bird species in Missouri and will start in July through August. You’ll definitely notice this bird’s bright yellow appearance.
  3. Bell’s Vireo: These birds can be found in Missouri between May and August. They have a unique two-part song that sounds like they are asking a question and then answering it based on the rising and descending tone.
  4. Orchard Oriole: These beauties are only in Missouri from late April through the end of August. They have a sweet, bubbly song that is sure to delight.
  5. Cerulean Warbler: These lovely birds can be seen in Missouri from mid-April to September. These blue beauties are currently a species of conservation concern.
